Time does not seem to me to be moving faster. A day still has twenty-four hours, and a year still has the same number of days. Yet the experience of time has changed. The recent past often feels much farther away than it should.

Sometimes a discussion, a tool, or a technical idea that is only six months old already feels historical. It belongs to an earlier period—not because much time has passed, but because the world around it has changed.

I first noticed this while thinking about technology.

When I remember the development of computers and mobile phones, I see a certain amount of space between major changes. A new technology arrived, and then there was time to understand it, use it, and slowly allow it to become ordinary.

Phones changed from simple devices to colour-screen phones, then to phones with cameras, internet access, smartphones, and touchscreens. The changes were significant, but there was still a period of adjustment between one reality and the next. Technology changed, but people had time to live with the change.

Modern smartphones continue to improve, but many of those improvements are incremental. The camera becomes better, the processor becomes faster, the battery becomes more capable. The basic environment remains familiar.

Artificial intelligence feels different.

The important change is not only that new capabilities are arriving faster. The period during which a capability remains new—and the period during which knowledge about it remains useful—also seems to be becoming shorter.

A new model appears. New reasoning systems arrive. Tools are added, workflows change, and techniques that once required elaborate effort become ordinary or unnecessary. A tutorial or demonstration that felt current a year ago can already seem strangely old.

Perhaps this is why the present feels more compressed. The problem is not simply that we are busy or that there is more information. It may be that more meaningful changes are taking place within the same unit of time.

Human beings do not experience time only through clocks. We also experience it through events, changes, and memories. When we remember a period of life, we do not remember only its dates. We remember a whole state of the world.

There was a time before smartphones. There was a time before the pandemic. There was a time before artificial intelligence became part of ordinary work and conversation. These are not merely dates. They are different periods within memory.

If very little changes during a year, that year may be remembered as one continuous stretch. But if the way we work, learn, and understand the world changes repeatedly within that same year, memory may divide it into several smaller periods.

Outside us, it is still one year. Inside memory, it may contain several different realities.

This may also explain why the recent past can feel distant. The actual distance may be two years, but if those two years contain many changes, their inner distance can feel much greater.

Thinking about this led me to another question: what is the present?

It may be only this moment. But perhaps it is also the period during which the world remains sufficiently familiar. It is the time in which what we have learned is still useful, and the systems we understand still work in the way we expect.

If the external world changes continuously, that stable present becomes shorter. The future becomes the present quickly, and the present becomes the past just as quickly.

Perhaps this is what we mean when we say that time is moving fast. But I am not sure that time itself has accelerated.

Maybe the frequency of meaningful change has increased. And perhaps that increased frequency changes how time is experienced.

Memory creates another layer to this problem. We do not see the present as completely new. Our past experiences, habits, assumptions, and learned ways of thinking are always present in the background. The past remains within us and helps us interpret what is happening now.

But when the external world changes quickly, the past can remain alive inside us while the reality outside has already moved ahead.

I find it useful to think of this as moving between rooms. When I leave one room and enter another, the first room has not been destroyed. It remains where it was. Its memory remains with me. But I am no longer standing inside it.

The past may work in a similar way. It does not need to be erased. It may simply stop being the environment in which we are currently living.

This is also why I would be careful with the idea that technology is “erasing” the past. History is not disappearing. More of it is being recorded than ever before. Old videos, papers, repositories, and tutorials continue to exist.

What may be changing is something more subtle: the past may lose its operational relevance sooner.

A piece of information can remain available without remaining useful in the same way. A technical method can survive as a record while the environment that made it valuable has already changed.

Technology may not be erasing the past. It may be shortening the period during which the past can govern the present.

This is only a philosophical parallel, not a scientific conclusion. But it helps describe what seems to be happening. The past remains as memory, while its ability to organise the present becomes weaker or shorter-lived.

We may therefore be experiencing a compression in both directions of time. The future arrives sooner, while the recent past becomes obsolete faster.

For a long time, adapting to technology meant learning a new environment and then living inside it for a relatively stable period. The sequence was simple: learn, master, apply.

That sequence may increasingly become: learn, apply, watch the environment change, and learn again.

The period of mastery becomes shorter. Sometimes the environment changes while we are still learning it.

This creates a deeper problem than keeping up with new tools. It raises the question of what happens when people, institutions, businesses, and education systems have not finished adapting to one change before the next change arrives.

The present may become shorter than the time required to understand it.

That, for me, is the most interesting part of this reflection. Time itself may not be moving faster. The map of time inside us may be changing.

I may not experience time only as hours, days, and years. I may experience it through transitions between different states of the world. If the distance between those states keeps shrinking, time can feel denser, faster, and more fragmented.

This is not a final conclusion. It is an observation that began with technology and reached questions about time, memory, and the present.

For now, the simplest way I can express it is this:

Time may be flowing as it always has. What is changing is the experience of being inside it.
